I am trying to count all of the words in my document without the citations, e.g. (Lee et al., 2004). I have not cited the papers using endnotes or footnotes but in the actual text paragraphs so this option in the word count tool bar does not work. I know it is possible because I was shown how to do it over a year ago and remember it was really simple once you knew how.
The word count does not include formatting or the works cited page. Your essay should be formatted in, including double spacing throughout. All sources should be properly cited both in the text and on a works cited page. As with most academic writing, this essay should be written in third person. Please avoid both first person (I, we, our, etc.) and second person (you, your).
Generally, the word count would not include the title page, if you have one. Words used in tables or graphs, including the legends, would not normnally be included. If you use abstracts as part of the body of your material, then they would be included. Citations, on the other hand, would not. If the math equations constitute any portion of your overall content, then they would be included.
Hi Jo, you will see the formatted version (with the correct style - whatever that is) when it's submitted (which will include the citations) so you'll see the word count that includes them. The style is a tool for the writer to do a word count without citations included. Of course if you have EndNote yourself you can view the document with the style and exclude the citations.
